Nancy G. Reiser

Learn more about our music ministry

Nancy Reiser grew up in Jacksonville, FL. When not in school, music lessons, or large bodies of water, she was usually at church. Her teachers and mentors have been from the Lutheran, Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Methodist traditions. The granddaughter of a Lutheran pastor, Nancy inherited a deep love of hymns and the mystery and power of corporate worship.

At Sewanee (B.A.) she was president of the University Choir and Organist for US and UK choir tours, involving daily Choral Evensong in parish churches and English cathedrals. After college, Nancy served as Music Intern at Nashville's West End United Methodist Church, followed by graduate studies (M.Mus) at the Cleveland Institute of Music. In Cleveland she was assistant Organist/Director at Church of the Covenant (Presbyterian). She returned to Sewanee for a sabbatical replacement position as University Organist-Choirmaster/ visiting professor.

Since that time, Nancy has worked as full-time music director/organist in Jacksonville FL, Austin TX, and Nashville.

Nancy has two daughters: Shealy, a teacher in the Boston Public Schools, and Kate, an undergraduate in the UVA School of Nursing…and Louise, a 7-year-old golden retriever.

When she is not at the church, Nancy loves to be reading, hiking, or whitewater rafting.

Nancy oversees the music program of First Presbyterian Church. She directs and accompanies the FPC choirs and all rehearsals, prepares and plans liturgies with clergy and staff, plans and administers the annual music budget, and ensures that the church's instruments (pipe organ, pianos, handbells) are well-maintained.

Nancy is in the office, though not always at her desk, Sundays through Thursdays for rehearsals, meetings, practice time, and service preparation. If you'd like to make an appointment, Monday and Tuesday mornings 8:30 a.m. to noon are best; other times are also possible.
